CIA assistance to the production of Zero Dark Thirty
Watching *Zero Dark Thirty* without knowing the controversy behind it makes the story seem fairly straightforward: intelligence is gathered, information is extracted, and eventually the trail leads to Osama bin Laden. The reality behind the film became much more contested when reports emerged that the CIA had secretly cooperated with the filmmakers.
What made the cooperation controversial was the movie's portrayal of the agency's "enhanced interrogation techniques," widely described as torture, and the suggestion that those methods played an important role in obtaining information that ultimately helped locate bin Laden. That version of events was later challenged by the findings of the Senate's 2014 report on the CIA's interrogation program.
The Senate review described the program as brutal and poorly managed and concluded that the interrogations did not produce the intelligence successes that had been claimed. The contrast between the film's portrayal and the official findings turned the movie into something bigger than a Hollywood production, raising questions about how intelligence agencies influence public narratives about their own actions.
