Creepy Christmas encounter in the forest

My partner and I went for a walk after a holiday meal. We carried a powerful flashlight, and I brought a camera because I enjoy photographing nature after dark.

We followed a narrow path beside a forest. In a wooded section, the flashlight reflected off a parked car hidden near the trees. Cars were not normally allowed on that path, and the windows were frozen, suggesting that it had been there for some time. The path was secluded, so we became cautious.

I noticed an unusual structure on a tree and asked my partner to aim the flashlight at it while I took photographs. After I had taken several pictures, my partner suddenly said that a man was standing behind us in the middle of the path.

A man stood just beyond the reach of the flashlight, facing us without speaking. I first thought he might have been startled by us photographing the tree near his car. I explained what I was doing and asked whether he needed light. He said he did not.

His behavior was so strange that we decided to leave. We continued along the path toward the next village, while the man remained behind us. When we reached the first streetlight, we looked back and saw the car slowly emerge from the forest. It turned around, drove back into the trees, and switched off its lights. The man had not left.

We took a longer route home. Our flashlight battery died, and my phone was nearly out of power, so I waited until we reached the house before contacting the police. I gave them everything I remembered, including the letters from the car's license plate, although I had not recorded the full number.

The more I thought about the encounter, the less ordinary it seemed. The car had been hidden on a path where it did not belong. Its windows were frozen, meaning it had probably been there before we arrived. The man had somehow approached us without making a sound, had no flashlight of his own, and remained silent when I spoke to him.

Later, a housemate suggested that he might have been watching nearby homes from the edge of the forest. From the elevated ground, someone could look into backyards without being easily seen. That explanation seemed plausible, but it did not make the encounter less frightening.

I had considered photographing the parked car when we first saw it, but something made me decide not to. In hindsight, that may have protected us. If the man had been planning a burglary or something worse, a photograph showing his car and license plate could have given him a reason to attack us.

The next time I walk near that forest, I will not assume that a silent figure standing just beyond the light is harmless. To the man who watched us from the darkness, let us never meet again.
