Empty Room is NOT empty
I never believed the stories about people hearing someone call their name when nobody was around. I always thought it was just your brain filling in gaps, like hearing your phone vibrate when it never did.
That changed when I was twelve.
My family had just moved into an old house that had been sitting empty for years. Nothing about it seemed unusual at first. It was just outdated, with creaky floors, old wallpaper, and rooms that always felt colder than the rest of the house.
The first few weeks were normal.
Then I started hearing someone say my name.
The first time, I was sitting upstairs in my bedroom playing a game when I heard my mom call me from downstairs.
“Come here for a second.”
It sounded exactly like her.
I walked down the stairs and found her sitting at the kitchen table.
When I asked what she wanted, she looked confused.
“I didn’t call you.”
I laughed because I thought she was messing with me.
A few days later, it happened again.
This time it was my dad’s voice coming from the hallway outside my room.
“Hey, come here.”
I opened the door immediately, expecting him to be standing there.
The hallway was empty.
I checked the entire upstairs, then walked downstairs and found my dad watching TV.
When I asked him if he had been upstairs, he told me he had been sitting there for the last hour.
After that, I started ignoring it.
I convinced myself it was the house settling, neighbors, anything that made sense.
Until one night.
I was lying in bed with the lights off when I heard my little sister laughing outside my room.
A quiet, playful laugh.
I opened my door and looked down the hallway.
Nobody was there.
I walked toward her bedroom, expecting to find her awake.
Her door was closed.
When I opened it, she was asleep.
I stood there for a few seconds, completely frozen.
Then I heard it again.
The laugh.
But this time it came from behind me.
I turned around.
The hallway was empty.
I ran back into my room and locked the door.
The next morning, I told my parents everything.
They didn’t believe me at first, but later that day my dad admitted something strange.
He said that when he was working late in the house a few nights earlier, he heard my voice calling him from upstairs.
He thought I was awake.
But when he checked, I was asleep.
That was the first time I realized it wasn’t just happening to me.
Years passed.
I eventually moved away, and I almost forgot about the house.
Then, when I was twenty three, I visited my parents for the weekend.
The first night there, I woke up around 3 AM.
The house was completely silent.
Then I heard it.
My own voice.
From the hallway.
Whispering my name.
Not my parents’ voices.
Not a stranger.
Mine.
I stayed completely still.
Then the voice spoke again.
But this time it said something I will never forget.
“Don’t open the door.”
I never found out what would have happened if I did.
