I Caught My Grandfather Talking to a Vent

When I was a kid, I thought my grandfather was just getting old and starting to act strange. Every night, around the same time, he would leave the living room and walk down the hallway to an old air vent near the floor. He would kneel down in front of it and start whispering like he was having a conversation with someone. I used to watch from around the corner, trying to figure out who he was talking to, but there was never anyone there.

Eventually, I asked him about it. I expected him to laugh and tell me he was joking, but instead he looked at me seriously and said he was talking to the dead. He told me the vent wasn't connected to just the rest of the house, it went somewhere deeper, somewhere things existed that most people never knew about. I thought he was just telling me a creepy story, the kind grandparents make up to entertain kids, but the way he said it made me feel like he actually believed every word.

A few weeks later, curiosity got the better of me. After everyone went to sleep, I crawled over to the vent and pressed my ear against the metal. At first, I only heard the normal sound of air moving through the pipes. Then, slowly, I started hearing voices. They were faint, almost like someone whispering from another room. I pulled away, thinking I was imagining it, but when I listened again, they were still there.

The voices started becoming clearer over the next few nights. Sometimes they sounded like people having conversations. Other times they sounded like they were calling my name. I finally told my grandfather what I heard, expecting him to be excited that I could hear them too. Instead, all the color drained from his face. He told me I was never supposed to listen, and I was never supposed to answer.

That was the first time I realized he wasn't talking to the vent because he wanted to. He was talking to it because he was trying to keep something calm. He told me the voices weren't the spirits of dead people, they were something pretending to be. They knew things they shouldn't know, and they were always trying to convince people to get closer.

I never heard my grandfather speak to the vent again after that night. A few years later, when we moved out of the house, I thought I was finally done with it. But even now, whenever I hear air moving through a vent, I still get that same feeling I had as a kid. Like something is on the other side, waiting for me to whisper back.
