Internet is not safe
I remember when I first heard people talking about the NSA watching everyone online, I thought it was just another internet theory.
The kind of thing people post about at 3 AM and nobody takes seriously.
Then 2013 happened.
I started reading about the Edward Snowden leaks, and what stood out to me was how much of it was based on actual documents, not just rumors.
Before the leaks, a lot of people believed that the government collecting huge amounts of phone records and internet data was impossible.
But the documents revealed that the NSA had been running large surveillance programs that collected information on a massive scale.
One of the biggest controversies was a program called PRISM, which involved collecting data from major internet companies.
The exact details of how companies participated and what information was accessible became a major debate, with companies denying some interpretations of the reports and government officials defending the programs as necessary for national security.
The part that shocked a lot of people wasn't just that surveillance existed.
It was the scale.
Phone calls.
Emails.
Online activity.
Location information.
Things most people assumed were private.
The government argued these programs were designed to prevent terrorism and protect national security.
Critics argued that collecting information on millions of ordinary people crossed a line and created a system of mass surveillance.
When Snowden leaked the documents, he basically confirmed something many people had been arguing about for years.
The debate wasn't about whether surveillance existed.
It was about how much surveillance was happening and how much the public was allowed to know.
The weirdest part is how quickly people adapted.
A few years earlier, saying "the government might be watching everything online" sounded paranoid.
After the leaks, the conversation completely changed.
Because sometimes the difference between a conspiracy theory and reality isn't whether it's true.
Sometimes it's just whether someone has the documents to prove it.
