NFL influence over concussion research
A congressional investigation into football's long term health risks raised an uncomfortable question about the relationship between the NFL and scientific research. The inquiry reported that the league had improperly tried to influence a government research center that was studying the connection between repeated concussions and brain disease.
The issue wasn't simply about what happened on the field. Researchers were trying to understand whether the repeated head injuries associated with professional football could lead to serious neurological problems later in life, while the NFL had an obvious interest in how those findings were produced and communicated.
What made the congressional report significant was the conflict between those two interests. A powerful professional sports organization was being accused of interfering with research into a potential public health problem connected directly to its sport, putting questions of scientific independence, institutional influence and player safety under much greater scrutiny.
