Political abuse of psychiatry

For someone to be labeled mentally ill simply because they opposed a government sounds almost impossible until the historical record starts showing otherwise. Political abuse of psychiatry refers to cases where psychiatric diagnoses, detention or treatment were used not because someone genuinely required medical care, but because their views or actions were considered politically inconvenient.

In authoritarian systems, dissenters could be portrayed as mentally unstable and placed in psychiatric institutions rather than being treated as political opponents. The diagnosis itself could then become a tool of control, giving authorities a medical justification for isolating someone who challenged the established order.

What makes the history particularly unsettling is the authority attached to the medical system. Once political disagreement could be reframed as mental illness, confinement could appear legitimate on paper while functioning as a form of repression. It wasn't an indictment of psychiatry itself, but of what could happen when medical authority was placed at the service of political power.
