Pretend to Sleep

I came across this story while reading about strange military folklore, and the detail that caught my attention was how many people claimed to hear the same thing. Most ghost stories involve one person seeing something unusual, but this one involved an entire room of soldiers hearing a voice that shouldn't have been there.

The story reportedly comes from a remote island training camp where soldiers had already shared rumors about strange occurrences around the base. One night, a group of soldiers were resting in their barracks when one of them decided to fake being asleep to avoid getting noticed by a strict sergeant. He kept his eyes closed and stayed completely still, waiting for the situation to pass.

Then, according to the account, a little girl's voice quietly whispered directly into his ear: "Don't worry, you can continue to pretend sleep." The soldier immediately opened his eyes, expecting someone to be standing beside him, but there was nobody there. What made the situation much stranger was that the other soldiers in the room reacted too. They claimed they had all heard the same voice at the same time.

The group searched the barracks and surrounding area, but there was no child anywhere nearby. The location was supposedly heavily restricted, making it almost impossible for someone to simply wander in unnoticed. Nobody could explain where the voice came from or how it knew exactly what the soldier was doing.

Whether the story is a genuine unexplained encounter or one of those legends that grows with every retelling, the detail that makes it unsettling is the same one that made the soldiers believe something strange happened. It wasn't one person hearing something in the dark. It was an entire room of people hearing a voice that seemed to know exactly what was happening before anyone said a word.
