The Campania toxic-waste crisis and organized-crime cover-up
It was supposed to be paradise.
Then came the stories about what was happening beneath it.
For years, allegations surrounding Mafia activity and toxic-waste disposal had been tied to parts of the Italian countryside, with locals claiming that contaminated land was becoming impossible to ignore. Some believed the damage went far beyond the environment, with illnesses and deaths raising questions that didn’t seem to have easy answers.
The darker part was the suggestion that some of it may have been known about long before the wider public heard anything.
Residents reportedly spoke of poisoned land and children being lost, while accusations of a cover-up began to surround the case. Whether every claim could be proven was another matter. Much of what was reported came through testimony and journalism rather than confirmed judicial findings.
Still, there’s something unsettling about the idea that a place known for its beauty could have had something so toxic buried underneath it.
