The Emergency Call That Came From My House

The police told me I was lying.

That was the part that bothered me the most.

Not the call.

Not what happened afterward.

The fact that nobody believed me when I tried to explain it.

I was living alone in a small apartment at the time. Nothing strange had ever happened there. No weird noises, no creepy neighbors, nothing.

Then one night, around 3 AM, my phone rang.

It was the emergency services.

The operator asked if I was safe.

I remember being confused because I hadn't called anyone.

I told her that.

There was a long pause.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

"Sir, we received a silent emergency call from your number about two minutes ago."

I checked my phone.

There was no outgoing call.

I told her it must have been a mistake.

Then she asked me a question.

"Are you alone right now?"

I looked around my apartment.

The lights were off.

Everything was quiet.

"Yes," I said.

The operator hesitated.

Then she lowered her voice.

"Sir, the caller didn't speak, but we could hear someone breathing."

I immediately sat up.

I thought maybe someone had somehow gotten into my apartment.

I grabbed a flashlight and checked every room.

Nothing.

The windows were locked.

The front door was still deadbolted from the inside.

I told the operator that nobody was there.

She said officers were already on the way.

When they arrived, they searched the entire apartment.

They found nothing.

They told me maybe my phone had accidentally called emergency services in my pocket.

It was embarrassing, but I accepted that explanation.

Until one officer asked me something strange.

"Do you have another phone?"

I said no.

He looked confused.

Then he showed me his screen.

The emergency call wasn't coming from my bedroom.

It was coming from inside my apartment.

Specifically, from the hallway.

The officers checked the call logs again.

The location matched my address.

But the device ID didn't match my phone.

They searched again.

This time they found something.

Behind a loose panel near my closet was an old phone.

It wasn't connected to anything.

The battery was completely dead.

The screen was cracked.

The officer picked it up and looked at me.

"Do you recognize this?"

I didn't.

Then he turned it over.

Written on the back, in faded marker, was my apartment number.

The police took it as evidence.

I thought that was the end of it.

A few days later, an officer called me.

He told me they managed to recover one piece of data from the phone.

A single saved recording.

I asked what it was.

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said,

"It was a recording of someone calling emergency services."

I asked when it was made.

The officer went quiet.

Then he said,

"The timestamp was from tomorrow."

I moved out the next day.

I never found out who left that phone there.

But I still have the voicemail the police sent me.

It starts with silence.

Then you can hear someone breathing.

Then my own voice whispers:

"Please hurry. I'm hiding in the closet."

The recording was made before I ever knew there was a phone hidden in my apartment.
