The Man in the Yellow Raincoat

My mom's friend lived in an apartment complex with her young daughter, and her husband worked away from home during the day. One day, she was coming home from running errands with her daughter and got onto the elevator in her building. A man wearing a cap and a yellow raincoat kept his head low so that she could not really see his face. She immediately felt uneasy and made her daughter stand on the side furthest away from him. When she pressed the button for her floor, there was no other lit number. She also noticed that he was carrying something wrapped in newspaper close to his side.

She began to panic and pretended to call home to her husband, saying things like, "I am on the elevator and about to get off. Can you get the door for me?" She tried to make it sound as though her husband was waiting at home.

When the elevator reached her floor, she quickly got off, grabbed her daughter, and walked toward her apartment. The man also got off and slowly followed her down the hallway. When she reached her door, she banged on it and shouted, "Hey, yeobo, I am home! Please open the door!" She pretended that he was coming to answer. The man in the yellow raincoat began walking back toward the elevator.

When he seemed far enough away, she picked up her daughter and began entering the door code. The buttons made sounds, and the man realized that no one was going to answer the door for her. He turned around and ran back toward her. She was screaming. When the door opened, she threw her daughter inside and followed her. The man was only inches away, but she shut and locked the door before he could wedge his hand or a weapon into it. Through the peephole she saw him walking back toward the elevator.

Later, she watched a news report about the capture of a serial killer named Yoo Young Chul, who had murdered numerous victims. She said she could never forget the dread she felt when she recognized the yellow raincoat and hat he was wearing when he was apprehended.
