The Suspension Bridge

I've replayed this moment in my head more times than I can count, and the strangest part is how normal everything felt right before it happened. My boyfriend and I had just arrived in Ithaca for a vacation and decided to stop near Cornell's campus to see one of the suspension bridges. I'm terrified of heights, so even stepping onto it was a challenge for me. He kept encouraging me to take it one step at a time, joking with me and making sure I didn't look down. Eventually, we reached the middle of the bridge and stopped to take a picture because the view was incredible.

While we were standing there, a woman walking in the opposite direction approached us. She seemed completely ordinary, just another person enjoying the scenery. She smiled and asked if we'd like her to take a picture of the two of us. We politely declined, saying we were okay, and she just smiled back. There was nothing strange about her expression or behavior. She didn't seem upset or distracted. She simply nodded, turned around, and continued walking toward the other side of the bridge.

What happened next still doesn't feel real. She reached the end of the bridge, stepped forward, and jumped. There was no pause, no hesitation, no moment where she looked unsure. It wasn't dramatic or emotional. She moved almost like she was expecting there to be more walkway beyond the edge. My brain couldn't process what I was seeing because everything about the moment before that had been so ordinary. One second she was a stranger offering to take our picture, and the next she was gone.

The sound afterward is something I'll never forget. People talk about seeing traumatic things, but sometimes it's the sounds that stay with you the longest. My boyfriend and I just stood there frozen, unable to understand what had happened. Emergency responders arrived, and the area was eventually closed off, but nothing could erase those few seconds. Years later, I still think about how casually she approached us, how normal that interaction felt, and how quickly an ordinary vacation memory became something I'll carry for the rest of my life.
