The tighty whitey twins

My boyfriend and I had recently started living together, and we both relied on word of mouth to find work. He did carpentry, while I offered cleaning and organizing help. One day, an elderly woman called him about finishing a kitchen. She said her husband had died before the cabinets could be installed and insisted that he come immediately.

When my boyfriend explained that he could not come until the next day, the woman suddenly became interested in whether his girlfriend would accompany him. At the time, he thought she was simply lonely. The next day, we drove together and brought a small bouquet of flowers.

From outside, the woman's house looked charming, though the yard was overgrown. A tiny elderly woman answered the door wearing a dirty nightgown and slippers. She reached toward my face, but I held out the flowers. Her smile disappeared as she took them and led us inside.

The living room was dark and smelled of cigarettes, mold, and body odor. In the kitchen, a large, unkempt man sat at the table. The woman introduced him as her son. He said nothing, but he wore only dirty underwear and watched us without expression.

When my boyfriend asked about the cabinets, the woman became confused and angry. She said she expected him to bring the materials, even though she had originally said that the materials were already there. She accused him of trying to sell her something and raised her voice.

The first man hurried into the kitchen when he heard her. Then another man, similar in age and appearance, entered from a second doorway. He was also wearing only dirty underwear. The woman had claimed to live alone, but now both men were blocking the ways out of the kitchen.

My boyfriend moved in front of me and calmly said that we needed to leave. The first man did not move. The second stood close by, staring at me in a way that made me feel trapped. I tugged at my boyfriend's arm and pointed out that the second man was behaving in a disturbing and sexually threatening manner.

That was when my normally calm boyfriend began shouting. He threatened the men and their mother, making himself sound far more dangerous than he was. The sudden change startled the first man. He rushed toward the second, pushed him into another room, and slammed the door.

My boyfriend and I hurried out of the house. The woman remained inside, shouting after us. We got into the car and drove away without stopping to argue or explain. Once we were safely out of sight, we realized how close we had come to being physically trapped inside.

The entire call had been based on a false story about a kitchen renovation. There were no cabinets waiting to be installed, and the woman had not actually needed a carpenter. She had insisted that a strong man come immediately, then became excited when she learned he would bring a female companion. Her claim that she lived alone was also untrue.

The experience stayed with me because the house looked harmless from outside, while everything inside felt staged to draw us farther from the door. The old woman controlled the conversation, the two men appeared from separate rooms, and both exits were blocked before we understood what was happening.

We never returned. I still think about how easily a routine service call could have become a dangerous situation. The people inside did not need to explain their intentions. Their behavior made it clear that leaving quickly was the only safe choice.
